About ShamSports

ShamSports is the work of Mark Deeks: an independent basketball research project built around player evaluation, salary-cap mechanics and the many small decisions involved in constructing a team.

What this site is for

ShamSports began as a place to study the NBA's basketball-operations side in more detail than was generally available elsewhere. It has changed shape several times since then, but its central interest has remained the same: how basketball teams identify players, manage money and turn rules into competitive advantage.

The site is deliberately broad because team building is broad. Scouting, roster construction, contracts, transaction rules, market value and long-term planning all overlap. ShamSports concentrates chiefly on two of those areas: evaluating players and understanding the salary cap.

It is also, candidly, a working CV. The database, tools and writing collected here show the kind of subjects I research, the level of detail I enjoy and the type of work I want to keep doing. The site will never be entirely finished, because the player pool changes every day and the rules never stay still for long.
