Garret Siler - The blisteringly efficient Siler just got released from China, where he shot his usual 68% from the field. He somewhat mirrors Curry as a player, yet without the athleticism, the sideshow, and with a better grasp of interior defense.

In some additional related bookkeeping, the reason for many of the players listed in the previous list was due to the NBA's contract guarantee date. All players on NBA rosters on or after January 10th have their contracts guaranteed for the remainder of the season (future seasons are unaffected); this also includes waivers. In-season waivers are 48 hours long and do not include weekends; therefore, with the 10th of January being a Monday, players had to be waived by close of business on Wednesday 5th in order to have cleared waivers before the deadline date.

Eleven players with not fully guaranteed contracts were waived in the hours before that deadline: Steve Novak, Damien Wilkins, Jarron Collins, John Lucas III, Ime Udoka, Lester Hudson, Ronald Dupree, Brian Skinner, Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Sundiata Gaines and Rodney Carney. Twenty seven unguaranteed players survived; Delonte West, Von Wafer, Brian Scalabrine, Samardo Samuels, Manny Harris, Alonzo Gee, Brian Cardinal, Melvin Ely, Gary Forbes, Jeremy Lin, Ish Smith, A.J. Price, Ike Diogu, Luc Richard Mbah A Moute, Ben Uzoh, Didier Ilunga-Mbenga, Shawne Williams, Malik Allen, Garret Siler, Patty Mills, Sean Marks, Darnell Jackson, Chris Quinn, Sonny Weems, Jeremy Evans, Cartier Martin and Hamady Ndiaye. Players with contracts who had already become guaranteed due to specific guarantee stipulations in their contracts were Sherron Collins, Derrick Brown, Josh McRoberts, Willie Warren, Derrick Caracter, Luther Head and Joey Dorsey.

Siler has been covered on this site a great many times, mainly because he's so freaking intriguing. Arbitrarily, here's a blurb from him in the Nets summer league round-up:

The Hawks signed Siler for training camp last season, but despite their perennial lack of centres, they did not keep him. Siler then went to China, where he averaged 14.1ppg, 9.3rpg and 1.6bpg in only 23.2 mpg. His per minute numbers are obviously substantial, and the field goal shooting (76%) was as ridiculously freaking efficient as ever, but unfortunately Siler can't stay on the court. After putting up 13 points, 14 rebounds, 7 blocks and 6 fouls on 32 minutes on debut, Siler's PT after that inconsistent due to his foul problems. Only four times did he play more than 30 minutes per game, and he once fouled out in only 10. Siler averaged 4.2 fouls per game will playing less than half of it, which is quite an extreme problem. (Mind you, Amir Johnson just got $7 million a year after a lifelong struggle with the same problem.)

Scoring that efficiently cannot be overlooked, though. The lowest field goal percentage Siler has ever shot anywhere, ever, is 68.9%. That is simply ridiculous, and it makes a team want to overlook the flaws in his game. Rightly. Siler has a chance.

True to form, Siler shot 83% from the field in that tournament. And he also fouled 12 times in 43 minutes. Those are the things Garret Siler does, for now and for ever, in accordance with prophecy. I want to see that on an NBA court.

Siler turned down a training camp invite from the Minnesota Timberwolves, with whom he had played in summer league, to instead sign with the Atlanta Hawks. In hindsight, this may not have been the best decision, since the Hawks had the deeper frontcourt (and had Randolph Morris's contract guaranteed whether they wanted it to be or not), and after losing out on a roster spot to Jason Collins and Othello Hunter, Siler went to China.

If you didn't already know, Garret Siler is a ridiculously efficient scorer. In his four seasons at Division 2 Augusta State, Siler shot no lower than 69% from the field in any season, with his highest being the 79% he shot in his senior season. It's probably no real surprise then that Siler shot 76% in the CBA this year, averaging 14.1 points and 9.3 rebounds in only 23 minutes per game. I know of no one else that does that.

Siler struggled with fouls all year, averaging 4.2 per game and fouling out in 4 of Shanghai's 8 playoff games. But the efficiency and offensive rebounding (4.2 per game in such little time) are still there. Just as long as you overlook the 59% free throw shooting.

Siler's first professional season out of Division 2 Augusta State hasn't started brilliantly. His per minute numbers are obviously substantial, and the field goal shooting as ridiculously freaking efficient as ever, but unfortunately Siler can't stay on the court. Only three times has he played more than 30 minutes per game, and he once fouled out in only 10. His last game featured a 31 point, 12 rebound, 1 foul in 28 minute performance in a win over Shanxi, so he can perform Tim Westwood-style big things when given the opportunity. But to be given the opportunity, he has to stop fouling. It's a solid start, though.
