Where Are They Now, 2010; Part 72
May 31st, 2010

– Robert Whaley After about two years off the scene, Whaley re-appeared on it again in March…..but in a bad way. For a longer breakdown of the life and times of the Fail Whale, click here.   – Davin White Former Cal-State Northridge guard White was once signed by the Suns, which is why his progress continues to be monitored. He spent much of this year on the shelf, but at the start of last month he signed with Mexican team Mineros de Cananea (with whom White also played in 2006 and 2008). Cananea play in the CIBACOPA, the “other” Mexican league that starts upon the completion of the superior LNBP. Nonetheless, even though the league is not of a high standard, White made up for it by starring quite nicely, averaging 22.6 points and 4.8 assists per game before getting injured.   – Jahidi White and Chris Whitney Former teammates White and Whitney are both now retired, and have gone into business together. They have started an employment agency called Staffing Across America, which aims to staff across America, and the duo are trying to take their staffing business global, with the aim of staffing around the world. Whitney has also done some TV work Comcast Sportsnet, and bizarrely, White has done some acting, playing the role of an alien in a made-for-TV move called “Showdown At Area 51”. White is listed as playing a character called “Kronan” – a quick Google search reveals that Kronan is an alien character within the 3.6/10 rated film. There follows a screen cap of an alien character in the movie. Is that really Jahidi White? God, I hope so. IMDB carries a trailer of said film; if you pause it at the 12 second mark, you will clearly see through the grippingly […]

Robert Whaley arrested for carrying drugs in his backside
March 12th, 2010

The cheerful-looking person in this picture is former Utah Jazz and Toronto Raptors big man, Robert Whaley. You may remember him, or you may not. But if you do, it’s probably because either: a) you’re a Cincinnati Bearcats fan who remembers Whaley for the one underwhelming year he brought your team in 2003-04 before being forced to transfer due to off-the-court issues, b) you’re a Raptors fan who remembers Whaley’s inclusion as a throw-in in the trade that ended the Rafael Araujo Experience, or c) you’re a Jazz fan who remembers Whaley as being the one that was arrested alongside Deron Williams back in 2005, in an incident that saw them humiliate themselves by giving false names to the police. Either way, your memories of Robert Whaley probably aren’t great. A recurrent theme in that list is Whaley’s trend of getting involved in off-the-court issues. Largely unbeknownst to me until today, Whaley has been making a habit of that over the last few years. In the early hours of this morning, per the Salt Lake Tribune, Whaley was a passenger in a car when he was arrested by “gang detectives”, whatever they are, and found to have marijuana in his buttocks. Upon being processed, it also turned out that Whaley was a wanted fugitive in the state of Michigan after being convicted of running a drug house back in 2008. The obligatory mugshot follows. 2008 also marked the last time Whaley played professional basketball, and his entire career, dating back to the end of his high school years, was not exactly dignified. After almost winning Mr Basketball in the state of Michigan in 2001, Whaley spent two years at Barton County Community College, averaging 16.9 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, before moving to Cincinnati for his junior season. Once […]

Where Are They Now, 2009; Part 56
March 16th, 2009

– Robert Whaley barely played in the D-League last year, averaging 4.0 points and 2.7 rebounds per game for the L.A. D-Fenders, and he has not signed anywhere this season. He also barely played in 2006/07, spending his time between the ABA, the Dominican Republic and Iran. Nevertheless, Whaley still received a full year of NBA salary back in the 2005/06 season, in spite of his relative failings in the professional game. He’s about to turn 27, he’s not yet played to a D-League standard, he’s got a lengthy criminal history, he lied to the police to his name to the Jazz about the cut in his hand, and he’s not even the most famous person with that name. But he made it briefly, and he got paid.   – Davin White is signed in Serbia with Swisslion Takovo Lions Vrsac. White averages 4.8 points, 3.3 fouls and 2.0 assists in the Balkan league, but no word on whether his finger nails are still really, really pink.   – Jahidi White has not played since an unsuccessful training camp bid with the Cavaliers in 2006. Since then, his only news-making appearance was in a non-speaking role on a sci-fi channel show called Showdown at Area 51. He played an alien.   – Rodney White started the year with Maccabi Tel-Aviv, fell out of favour after one game and got waived. Not one to be kept down, R-White signed in China with the Zhejiang Guangsha Lions, and he leads the country in scoring. Considering how easy it is to score in China if you’re American and/or able to jump off the floor, this is no mean feat. White averages 1.1 blocks, 2.4 steals, 5.1 assists, 8.3 rebounds and 36.4 points per game. (See what I did there?) In his last game, […]
