SG – 6’4, 209lbs - 25 years old – 2 years of experience
Committed, consistent and athletic, Nwaba was a pleasant surprise this season. He turned a limited skill profile into an excellent role; running the court, playing hard, scrapping and attempting only to do that which he can do, not overextending himself.
A limited handler, Nwaba’s 34.6% three-point shooting is an acceptable percentage, but on limited attempts. He basically shoots only as a weakside catch-and-shoot threat, not attempting to take jumpers off of the dribble or working around to try and do screen-based stuff. In this respect, then, he needs to develop - Nwaba need never be a ball-handling guard outside of transition opportunities, but he does need to be able to hit more jump shots in order to progress to the levels higher than this.
Nevertheless, Nwaba’s true value comes defensively. Long, athletic and very keen to use it, Nwaba is a defensive pest who routinely takes on those much bigger than he and makes their night very annoying. A few bump fouls and missed spots on a disjointed team unit are to be expected; the main thing of note is the good ball pressure, a skill he should hang his hat on for many years.
The whole of being bad is to find some diamonds in the rough. And, with the assist to the Lakers and the G-League, Chicago have done that. Now, they have to keep and polish him.
Player Plan: Entering restricted free agency and the qualifying offer alone will not likely be enough to get him back. Something in the realm of two years and $8 million would work, matching up about a three years and $15 million offer sheet. Depends on the internal projection of his growth potential. He has grown already, certainly. If someone out there sees something more MLE-ish, that would be a big surprise considering how the money has dried up league-wide, but it would be a test of resolve.
