2014 Summer League rosters - Detroit

Christian Watford - Oh look, another stretch forward. Since he was last profiled at last summer league, Watford has spent a year in Israel with Hapoel Eliat, averaging 9.8 points and 5.2 rebounds in 26 minutes per game, taking almost three three pointers per game, but hitting only 30.6% of them. He still wants to be a shooter, but he wasn't that good of one last year, as opposed to the 40%+ of his junior and senior years. Committing himself to the rebounding glass will make him not be so reliant on the jumpshot to be effective, though he seems not to want this. Watford can score inside the arc, draw fouls, post and drive occasionally, yet it is apparently Brian Cook he is targeting, so hopefully they'll make friends.

Christian Watford

Home ties notwithstanding, Watford has skills. One of the key cogs to the regeneration of the Hoosiers, Watford was a one time draft prospect whose stock died when he seemingly failed to improve much as an upperclassman. Undersized for a power forward, but not really a small forward in any way other than his jumpshooting, Watford has become (or rathner, failed to become much more than) a jumpshooting specialist. As if to evidence this, he shot 48% from three last season and 39% from two. Watford didn't develop much of a post-up or dribble drive game, still rebounds poorly, and is mediocre defensively. And although the shot is good, the release is a little slower than you'd want from a specialist.
