The 2018 NBA Manifesto
Tyler Cavanaugh
PF - 6’7, 238lbs - 24 years old - 1 year of experience
From summer league to training camp to two-way contract to full contract, Cavanaugh earned his way up and played pretty well in his first NBA season. He would probably still be under contract were it not for an odd choice of contract that had a substantial second-season guarantee kicking in on May 15th (why would the Hawks ever want to be or be likely to be in a position to make such decisions that early?). A face-up four who reads the play well, makes few mistakes, plays as tough as he can, hustles and backtaps, Cavanaugh’s NBA future will be limited by his lack of athleticism. Driving bigs and true centres can expose him, as can speedsters on switches, and he does not rebound out of his area well as this level. But he did enough to earn more looks for the next couple of years, and if the threes keep going up at high enough efficiency and volume, he could be back. Maybe even in Atlanta.
