Unfortunately, Curry missed the season due to a stress fracture in his leg. This in turn lost the momentum he had coming into the season after a career-best campaign in 2016/17.
In that campaign, Curry sought to throw off the only-a-shooter label that had been carried around with him in his career to date. It is still true to say that the jump shot is the only obvious plus-NBA skill he brings to the table, which is fine considering it is arguably the most important one a 6’2 guard can bring. Nevertheless, in 2016/17, Curry showed a bit more than that.
He showed he can defend adequately. Even if small and not exerting a huge amount of ball pressure, Curry took a fair amount of charges, showed quick hands and played the passing lanes well, making an impact on the end it was assumed that he never would. He also took on more of a responsibility as a ball handler, and while he does not have the dynamism, flair and ability to penetrate and kick like J.J. Barea does, he was at least stable in the role.
How does all this bode well for the future? Hard to tell. The injury should heal with no repercussions, yet Curry now enters his prime years without a contract or any sort of free agency momentum. Either way, though, as much as Dallas are (or should) be planning talent upgrades and need to move away from the plethora of small guards, they should explore the idea of bringing Curry back. He looked good there for a while.
Player Plan: Entering unrestricted free agency. A good second half in 2016/17 followed by a total absence of 2017/18 makes it hard to gauge what would be a fair price. $5 million, maybe?
