The 2018 NBA Manifesto

Reggie Hearn
SG - 6’5, 210lbs - 26 years old - 1 year of experience

Throughout his career both professional and collegiate, Reggie Hearn’s time on the court has been an exercise in cerebralitiness. This word, which I just made up and which has absolutely no chance of catching on, is hereby used to reflect how Hearn plays on the court; headily, if undynamically.

The adjective dump above is in the first instance an obvious description of Hearn’s athletic profile. Just about big enough for the NBA shooting guard spot, yet not especially fast or athletic and with no one part of that physical profile being stand-out NBA good, Hearn instead makes his impact through skills. But even then, he lacks for flash, flair, or a space-creating handle.

Instead, Hearn scores through his shot and knowing how to get open for it. He has improved as a shooter throughout his professional career (at the start, he was a distinctly sub-par shooter; now it is the mainstay of his offensive game), and he does so through a steady diet of catch-and-shoot possessions and a sneaky-attack of off ball cuts. This applies to both outside the three-point line and from the foul line area; he was doing this long before the NBA moved to stamp it out, so by God, he’s going to keep doing it.

Flanking the jumpers are smart if unexplosive forays to the rim off close-outs, decent rebounding effort for a guard, and some intelligent defensive reads. Hearn has not made the NBA prior, and may never make it again, due to there being other shooters out there with more favourable physical tools and defensive progressions. But make no mistake - Hearn earned it.

Player Plan:

Has a second season on his two-way contract. There will likely be better candidates for these limited positions, especially on a team already with Luke Kennard and Langston Galloway. But Hearn will still likely be around if required and desired.
