The 2018 NBA Manifesto

Jaylen Brown
SG/SF - 6’7, 225lbs - 21 years old - 2 years of experience

Brown showed not only growth from last season’s rookie year performance, but also growth throughout the season. As time went on, he grew in confidence in driving the lane and in getting out in transition; the athlete and assumed defensive specialist who was projectable but raw offensively is now well ahead of his own curve.

Indeed, his offence may now be ahead of his defence. When being drafted, it was supposed to be the other way around, and yet here is Brown, a confident outside shooter and fast break freight train, attacking off the dribble and going at the rim with confidence. He is not effective with the in-between game, he still has a slightly loose handle and the free-throw percentage is oddly low, but the latter two should remedy with time, and the former doesn’t matter. In fact, it is to his credit that he is taking the more efficient shots available. And he can at least hit a mid-ranger.

Defensively, Brown’s physical profile makes him very projectable, and he has already shown good work in this area. Long and with great recovery speed, he has not quite got down the consistency required (particularly off the ball), yet all the tools are there, as are half the results.

If Brown keeps developing at this rate, finishing in the paint, improving his defensive awareness and getting stronger with the ball, his potential is excellent.

Player Plan: Two years of rookie scale salary. Keep, keep developing, and keep starting.

2017 NBA Manifesto

Jaylen Brown
SF, 6’7, 225lbs, 20 years old, 1 year of experience

Not a huge amount to show for his rookie season, though he won trust and a steady rotation spot as the year went on, particularly defensively, where his greatest potential lies. The short leash speaks to how much there is to learn, especially on a team with particularly complicated schemes at either end. Nevertheless, Brown should be back doing right what he did before - backing up on the wing positions initially, defending three positions and trying to pick some spots without the ball offensively, potentially growing into the starting role of what is a winnable spot in the line-up next season. Needs a summer in the weight room and film room, interspersed with shooting drills, to reach what is a very high ceiling.

Player Plan: Three years of rookie salary scale remaining. Several years of enormous ceiling left. Keep, play, develop.
