.....Third Prize Is You're Fired

In signing Plaisted, Philadelphia have pulled off the unusual move of signing another team's draft pick. Detroit decided not to retain Plaisted's draft rights beyond this summer - whether this was their own decision, or done at the request of Plaisted and his agent, is unclear. The last time this happened was in 2007, when Joseph Blair asked Seattle to release his draft rights so that he could sign with Chicago for training camp. However, the fundamental difference is that Blair was drafted 11 years previously, while Detroit only drafted Trent in 2008. As for the most recent time before that, I have no idea. Needless to say, it's an extremely rare move, and a worrying misappropriation of assets from a team who:

a) traded a first rounder in obtaining those rights in the first place, and
b) who did this only last year.

Rough couple of years for Detroit management. Need a second wind. As for Plaisted himself, he brings athleticism to the table, but a series of injuries in his professional career have hindered the development that he needed in order to become an NBA player. It won't be this time, if ever.

2010 Summer League Rosters: Philadelphia 76ers

Trent Plaisted

Plaisted is the second member of this list to have his draft rights held by another NBA team. He is a former draft pick of the Pistons, who missed all but two games and 31 minutes before succumbing to a back injury. He returned this year and played for KK Zadar in Croatia, for whom he averaged 6.6 points and 3.8 rebounds in the powerhouse Adriatic League.

Why he is on the Sixers roster and not the Pistons one is not immediately clear - the same can be said of Hardin, who is on the Sixers roster but not the Thunder's. Last year, Charlotte allowed Gerald Henderson and Derrick Brown to play on other team's summer league rosters, but they did this because they did not have one of their own. Detroit and Oklahoma City do. And yet they chose not to include them. It's a poser.

Where Are They Now, 2010; Part 51

- Trent Plaisted

Pistons draft pick Trent Plaisted's first professional seasonw as basically a washout, playing in only 2 games and 31 minutes for Angellico Biella before suffering a season ending back injury. Now back in action - zing! - Plaisted is signed with KK Zadar in Croatia. His minutes (and his play) started small this year, but has ramped up throughout the year to the point that Plaisted is now one of Zadar's most important players. On the season Plaisted is averaging 8.7 points and 6.2 rebounds in 20 minutes per game in the Eurocup, 8.6 points and 6.0 rebounds in 19 minutes per game in the Croatian league, and 6.6 points and 3.8 rebounds in 13 minutes per game in the Adriatic League.
