Luke Babbitt
SF, 6’9, 225lbs, 28 years old, 7 years of experience

Babbitt took 281 shots this season, 268 of which were jump shots, and 210 of which were from three. He shot 41.4% from three-point range and 36.6% from two-point range; his ever-increasingly one dimensional play, then, is probably a good thing. Babbitt doesn’t board, is overmatched defending the interior and able to be gotten past on the perimeter, but at least there is defensive effort and the occasional surprising piece of footwork. He has an NBA role to play. Probably not as big of one as he received in 2016/17, though.

Player Plan: Expiring minimum salary contract. Worth another one, but too limited to be worth more than that, even if 6’9 shooters are in fashion.

Pick 16: Things get weird when Minnesota draft Luke Babbitt from Nevada with the 16th pick. The pick itself is not bad - a Luke Jackson-style player is fine in this range. But it's another small forward for Minnesota, and that remains true even after Ric Bucher comes on to announce that Babbitt is being traded to Portland, along with Ryan Gomes, in exchange for Martell Webster.

You can't draft someone at #16 better than Martell Webster? I bet I could. And is Martell Webster the best use for Ryan Gomes's partially guaranteed salary? Surely not.

Babbitt chews gum throughout his interview and wears a blue shirt with a white collar. Inauspicious debut.

The last player from Nevada drafted that high is currently on suicide watch in prison. True story. I'm sure it means nothing, though.
