VanVleet has been the full-time back-up point guard for a while now since the injury to Delon Wright, and has been consistently good at it. This has been particularly true lately, having averaged 24.6 fantasy points over the last five games. Despite a slight uptick in his cost, it is so slight as to have been irrelevant, and his production has increased far more than it has.

We picked VanVleet in this list yesterday with the explicit caveat that, despite his increased recent role and consistent production, he was not the type of player that would ever return a big night. He then immediately went and had one, recording 16 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals on his way to 37 fantasy points. We therefore stand by the suggestion tonight as well.

VanVleet has played at the very end of the rotation all year, but his minutes and output have increased in the absence of Delon Wright, who will miss the next month with a shoulder injury. VanVleet has played at least 16 minutes in each of the last five games, and while nothing about his undersized effort-based game will ever lend itself to any big individual nights, he has averaged 17.1 fantasy points over that span, a useful and consistent if small return.

Fred VanVleet
PG, 6’0, 195lbs, 23 years old, 1 year of experience

VanVleet didn’t play much for the big league club. When he did, he took 111 shots to score 107 points, a testament to the limitations he will always have in this area at the NBA level, especially around the basket. He will also have limitations defensively due to the same size disadvantage, combined with a lack of length and athleticism. So with this in mind, if he cannot shoot over defences or slow down the bigger, quicker opponents he will go against every night, it might not matter how high his IQ is or how steady of a hand he has at the point guard position.

Player Plan: Has an unguaranteed minimum salary contract for next season, and given that he is fourth on the point guard depth chart, staying fourth on the point guard depth chart and a marginal NBA talent, there seems to be no reason to guarantee it.

[...] DeMarre Carroll and Jonas Valanciunas are not drawing much defensive respect outside of the paint, while Patrick Patterson is not making enough shots this season to capitalise. Although somewhat effective, backup point guard Cory Joseph is not the scoring counterpart of DeRozan in the same way Lowry is, while Delon Wright and Fred VanVleet are not NBA calibre primary playmakers at this time. And while Serge Ibaka has become one of the better stretch bigs in the game, he is not creating looks with or without the ball so much as just taking what crops up. DeRozan is at his best as the first or second scoring option in a two-option line-up, but without Lowry, Toronto has thus far only had one.[...]
