A Brief Q&A

Question: What is this page about?

Answer: This is the rookie salary scale for the 2011/12 NBA season. The players drafted in the first round have to be signed to within 80% to 120% of the salaries listed above. That rule is inflexible. In practice, it is almost always 120%, with but the rarest of exceptions. See this long winded thing for more details.

Their only alternative is to not sign at all. However, if they do not sign, the team is still charged 100% of the rookie scale to their cap number, i.e. the figures listed above. This hold is also active before teams sign their first rounders, to prevent teams with cap space from signing other guys first with the cap space that would be created without a cap hold. The only way to avoid the cap hold is to renounce (i.e. disown) the player, which would mean that you just wasted a draft pick.

It's interesting and important, if you're a nerd. And if you're reading this, you probably are.
