Pre-draft night trades:
Below is a list of trades involving 2008
draft picks, that happened prior to the night of the draft. This
is to, hopefully, help explain why the teams do not consistently
pick in the reverse order of standings. Draft night trades can
be found on the Draft
2008 page.

FIRST
ROUND, PICKS 1-3: Chicago,
Miami
and Minnesota
won the top 3 spots in the lottery, thus moving up. Yeehaw.
FIRST
ROUND, PICK 15: Phoenix
owns Atlanta's
first round pick as a part of the Joe
Johnson trade of August 2005.
FIRST
ROUND, PICK 20: Charlotte acquires
Denver's
first round pick here, because Denver sold it to them the day before the draft.
FIRST
ROUND, PICK 21: New
Jersey acquires Dallas's
first round pick as a part of the Jason
Kidd trade of February 2008.
FIRST
ROUND, PICK 24: Seattle
acquires Phoenix's
first round pick as a part of the Kurt
Thomas trade of July 2007.
FIRST
ROUND, PICK 28: Memphis
acquires the L.A.
Lakers's first round pick as a part of the Pau
Gasol trade of February 2008.
SECOND
ROUND, PICK 31: Minnesota
acquires Miami's
second round pick, via Boston,
as a part of the Wally
Szczerbiak trade of January 2006. Boston originally recived
the pick from Miami as a part of the Antoine
Walker trade of August 2005.
SECOND
ROUND, PICK 33: Portland
acquires Memphis's
second round pick as a part of the Alexander
Johnson trade of June 2006.
SECOND
ROUND, PICK 36: Portland
acquires New
York's second round pick as a part of the Zach
Randolph trade of June 2007.
SECOND
ROUND, PICK 42: Sacramento
acquires Atlanta's
second round pick as a part of the Mike
Bibby trade of February 2008.
SECOND
ROUND, PICK 44: This one is confusing. Utah
acquires Philadelphia's
second round pick. In 1997, Philadelphia made a multi player swap
with Detroit,
featuring such luminaries as Eric Montross, Aaron
McKie, Theo
Ratliff and Jerry
Stackhouse. In the deal, Philadelphia was to give a 2005 second
rounder to Detroit. However, they didn't want to give up their own
that year (which was pick 45, susequently used to draft Louis
Williams). So, a couple of weeks before the draft, they acquired
another 2005 second rounder from Utah - number 60, subsequently used
to draft Alex
Acker - and it is this pick that they gave to Detroit to complete
the 1997 trade. To obtain Utah's 2005 second rounder that made this
happen, Philadelphia gave the Jazz their 2008 second rounder. And
that is how Utah owns Philly's 2008 second rounder. Nothing to do
with Kyle
Korver.
SECOND
ROUND, PICK 45: San
Antonio acquires Toronto's
second round pick as a part of the Giorgis
Printezis trade of June 2007.
SECOND
ROUND, PICK 46: Seattle
acquires Portland's
second round pick, via Boston,
as a part of the Ray
Allen trade of June 2007. Boston originally acquired the pick
from Portland as a part of the really quite poor Sebastian
Telfair trade of June 2006
SECOND
ROUND, PICK 48: Chicago
acquires Golden
State's second round pick as a part of the Milt
Palacio trade of September 2002.
SECOND
ROUND, PICK 50: Seattle
acquires Denver's
second round pick as a part of the multi player Earl
Watson trade of February 2006.
SECOND
ROUND, PICK 52: Miami
acquires Orlando's
second round pick as a part of the agreed-to compensation package
for Orlando signing Stan Van Gundy as their head coach.
SECOND
ROUND, PICK 55: Portland
acquires Phoenix's
second round pick, via Indiana,
as a part of the James
White trade of June 2006. Indiana originally acquired the
pick from Phoenix as a part of the James
Jones trade of August 2005
SECOND
ROUND, PICKS 54 & 56: Very confusing. Houston
has their own pick at number 54, although they had sorta traded it
away at one point. Houston originally made a trade with New
Orleans in July 2006, in which Houston received Kirk
Snyder in exchange for cash and allowing New Orleans the right
to swap their 2008 second picks should the Hornets so wish. Then in
June 2007, Houston made a trade with Seattle
which saw them giving up whichever one of the two picks that they
wound up with to Seattle in exchange for Carl
Landry. Then, just to confuse matters, in February 2008, New Orleans
and Houston made another trade - the three team multi-player deal
featuring Mike
James and Bobby
Jackson - which saw the Hornets giving the Rockets tehri 2008
second round pick. So now, with both their own second rounder and
the Hornets one, the Rockets chose to give the lesser of the two picks
- number 56 - to Seattle, thereby keeping number 54. I do this dull
shit so that you don't have to. Be grateful.
