Derrick Rose, as seen by someone who's never seen him
So the Chicago Bulls won the lottery. Hooray! Insert a Youtube video of a girl pulling a happy face while 'Surfin' Bird' by The Trashmen plays alongside her. Dance accordingly. Woop with joy. And stuff like that.
So apparently, we're (read: they're) now choosing between two players called Derrick Rose and Michael Beasley. Great.
So anyway. I don't watch NCAA basketball, because it's not on the telly. I also never read up on draftees, because I don't like to regurgitate other people's opinions. (Everyone else can do that, so I let everyone else do it.) This changed a bit, though, when they won the lottery.
So I've been doing the tiniest amount of research. And from what I can gather, Derrick Rose may or may not have good court vision due to his head coach running a system that doesn't feature a traditional point guard much, didn't score a whole lot due to a 'stacked' team, isn't a good shooter, and can't finish with his left hand.
So I ask you: what am I missing that makes this guy a number 1 pick? Why would a coach have a supposed surefire superstar and potential number 1 overall pick, and not tailor the offense to suit his strengths? Why would a potential number 1 pick, whose strength is supposedly his scoring, be outscored by his inferior, we're-not'going-to-be-drafted-number-one-overall-to-be-honest teammates?
So what have I missed?

Beasley is a tiny, non Illinois native. This combo means that a message board filled with Chicagoans will overwhelmingly choose Rose. Because they are mostly silly bastards. Thus is life.
You're fast.
Like you said, you are incredibly under qualified to make this post. Derrick Rose is incredibly athletic and explosive, has an improving jump shot, is a leader and a true point guard. He has superstar potential with very little risk. Since you don't know what your talking about (Im the same person who had to let you know Skiles was fired) check nbadraft.net and draftexpress.com
Hey yeah, I remember you! You're the person who has absolutely no understanding of how things like words and jokes work!
Oh and yeah, you're right, I don't know much about Derrick Rose. Perhaps I should have said something right at the very start about how I'd never seen him before.
^ See that? It's a joke. I know you don't pick up on them wells, o I'll guide you through.
I simply love that you post a series of questions on a blog, then belittle the commenter who answers the question. Its great.
I also get a great kick out of reading you telling me you dislike regurgitating opinions, then regurgitate Doug Thonus. Bravo.
long live sham!!!
It's all in the delivery. Who belittled who first?
Also, notice the words "this changed a bit". Hope this helps.
The Bulls desperately need a point guard after Hinrich's disastrous season. And Chicago is tempted by mythological tales of Steve Nash, Jason Kidd, and Chris Paul becoming basketball demigods and saving their teams from oblivion (how many rings total do those three have?) and the knowledge that "true" point guards are hard to come by.
1: Detroit's looking for a shake-up
2: Wade likes Chicago and very well might sign with them as a free agent if Miami doesn't use him as trade bait now.
3: Miami definitely wants Rose, and Chicago can't really decide which one they want anyway. Besides, Dorsey says Rose should go to Miami, and he knows all.
How 'bout this:
Larry Hughes and Derrick Rose to Miami for Beasley and Wade. Granted, Hughes is no Wade, but the salaries match and at least he's healthy. There's your price for Derrick Rose.
Target Chauncey, to fill the gap at the 1 spot with someone that can truly run a talented young team when the pressure's on. And if Hamilton's also for sale, snatch him up. Use any combination of Hinrich/Deng/Gordon/Sefolosha, even all of them, to lure Detroit into giving away the two veterans. (Deng has been untouchable for Paxon, but he may eventually realize that he's horribly overrated.)
Now you've cleared out the crowded backcourt while upgrading it (Chauncey, Hamilton, and Wade). Tyrus and Gooden at Power Forward. Beasley and Nocioni (and Deng?) at SF. Still a weak point at center, but the front court has beefed up a little, and it's still a young team that can run.
Miami doesn't even come close to making that trade. Hughes is a negative as a player, and Wade is one of the best around. He'll also probably be better than Rose ever will.
Miami should entertain offers for Wade before he becomes a 45-games-a-season type of player. But if they do decide to deal him, it will be for A LOT. Take Beasley out of that deal and they still won't do it.
I just have a sickening feeling the Bulls are going to take Rose and he turns out to be a bust.
They compare him to all the great point guards in the league, yet on You Tube all you see are his dunks from high school. I want to see the supposed Floor General running a team, to actually see him pass the ball on a highlight reel. A 6'2'' Guard isn't going to be repeatedly finishing at the rim in the NBA.
They should still go for the Detroit deal. Hinrich and Deng for Chauncey and Hamilton, with Sefolosha, a Chicago-style pizza, and draft picks as sweeteners.
Then take Beasley as a much better, capable-of-scoring-inside Deng.
hughes has value....next year...he'll have an expiring contract of over 10 million dollars...
i really like gooden, but he's got some value now...
my bulls pipe dream is draft rose and then trade the core in some package of: (kirk, gordon, gooden) for another pick (most likely late lottery or beyond) and draft Brandon Rush.
rush and rose are gonna be lock down defenders..rose is 6-3, rush is 6-7...rush has a smooth jumper and can shoot from anywhere..
now the bulls have height, quickness, strength, and defense in their backcourt..bring thabo off the bench or combo him at small forward wehn deng is out, and the bulls have height again.
and yes, a 6-2 guard (rose is almost 6-4 btw) can get the hoop at will...rose has the quickness to get there, but also the strength to finish. he has an uncanny knack to hang in there, take the hit, and score.
but more importantly, even if rose doesn't get to the rim, he is collapsing the other team's defense...that's how chris paul, nah, derron, chauncey, and tony parker are so effective.
no bulls guard can consistently break down the other team's defense.
beasley always looks off balance when its not a jump shot..he's is always double pumping and throwing up a prayer shot..he has a great great jumper, but i don't think he'll be this every possession low post guy as he's made out to be.
he can score the ball..he's more of a faceup guy and drive. he is more of a small forward than a power forward.
i would love to get chauncey to run this team, but that's the guy i believe the pistons wouldn't trade..i like rip's game, but i don't like him..he's always throwing late elbows or cheapshots.
deng appears over rated now cause he wasn't in the kobe deal (even though kobe said no trade if deng is in it)..
but kirk makes everyone worse..he is a point guard who dribbles the ball like there is a magnet in the floor. he just stands there for 20 seconds and throws a bail out pass and the bulls miss the shot, and suddenly, they can't shoot.
rose will make everyone better. beasley will make the offensive set better...which do you take?
rose has plenty of youtube videos in college that show his all around game..try searching something like: derrick rose part 1 (there is about 5 parts)..
Rose measured 6'3 in shoes at the pre-draft measurements, by the way.
ha, oh crap...yeah i just read that too and came back to see if i was gonna get flamed! i bought into the tv/espn pre stuff about his height.
If he truly is a true point guard, as everyone seems to profess, then 6'3 is fine, particularly an athletic 6'3.
It's the Ben Gordon type of 6'3 that you need to avoid.
I know nothing about these guys because I just choose not to watch college ball, but seems to me Kirk at least used to be good. Why not take the scoring post man that everyone complained they needed last year and hope he turns it around. Post guys are at least as hard to come by as point guards. If they take Rose then it's a fire sale for captain Kirk and they're still a dougnut team.
I would have to agree that, although Rose is being touted as the number one draft pick, he does lack a few of the characteristics that traditional number one selections usually possess. Like, say, a jump shot, or the slightest ability to dominate college basketball; even if it be for just a few games out of the season. Rose seems to me like a Devin Harris-ish type of a player, only less of an overbite. Then again, maybe this whole entry is completely bias due to the fact that I like everyone in the draft a heck of a lot more than i like Derrick Rose.
It is unbelievably stupid to measure people down to the 1/4 inch when they have their freakin' shoes on. I'm pretty sure people change their shoes more than they change their feet.
From SI:
Memphis point guard Derrick Rose also measured at a slightly smaller height than he was listed in college: Thought to be at least 6-foot-3, Rose actually stands 6-foot-2 1/2, the NBA said.
That's with his shoes. And you round down for midgets.
YouTubed Derrick Rose Part 1. Not a single pass in the video I saw. A lot of him taking it end-to-end himself, which won't be happening so much next year.
He may be known for taking the hit and then finishing with a little floating layup now, but he just might lose that reputation when 'Sheed is doing the hitting.
Pistons will dump Chauncey. Not only will they be willing; they're looking to do it. He'd be a hell of an upgrade over Kirk. Hamilton may be tougher to get from them. He's their leading scorer, younger, and healthier, despite an uncanny knack for getting poked in the eye...the one weak point in his bionic face.
Trading Kirk, Gooden, and Gordon to be able to draft Brandon Rush is the first move I've ever heard of that would actually be worse than trading Kukoc for John Starks. And I don't think any team out there can take on those three salaries and still be under the cap, which means they have to match within 25% (+$100,000). You have to get a hell of a lot more in return for those three than 1 low draft pick.
I'm gonna cry if there's a Cubs-Sox World Series this year and I haven't moved back to Chicago yet.
Nobody knows what they're talking about with the draft this year, because for the first time since Dick Vital was named World's Most Annoying Bald Guy in 1908 the playoff race in the NBA was way more interesting than the NCAA Tournament, and no one was watching.
